  • Management of the mine Environmental Authority (EA) process and liaison with Dept. Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP) regarding EA conditions.
  • Negotiation and liaison with DEHP regarding rehabilitation commitments.
  • Involvement in the development of offset conditions, including the wildlife corridor strategy.
  • Assistance to the Mine Operations Manager regarding the closure requirements.
  • Management of mine waste strategies for the purpose of approval, and negotiation with DEHP regarding mine waste EA conditions.

BHP Billiton

Sediment Treatment trial, Newcastle NSW Australia

 

Dredging and treatment of impacted sediments from Hunter River adjacent to the former BHP Steelworks site. Implementation phase. Delivered through JBS Environmental

 

  • Following a decade’s worth of impact from the steelworks factory, a trial was implemented to identify an appropriate option for remediation.
  • Responsibilities included on-site environmental management for the duration of the pioneering trial.
  • Monitoring of dust, water, sediment, and odour while 1,000m3 of tar-impacted sediments were dredged from the Hunter River adjacent to the former BHP Steelworks site.
  • A number of chemical stabilisation regimes were applied to the sediment, including Portland cement, fly ash and dolomite.
  • Testing for treatment success including leachability, geotechnical and aesthetic.
  • Verification of compliance with the licences and contract documents.

Closure and decommissioning planning for the Blair Athol Coal Mine. Closure phase delivered through Worley Parsons.

  • Coordination of the Decommissioning Plan.
  • Management of environmental studies relating to the closure planning process, and implementation of study recommendations.
  • Development of the Blair Athol rehabilitation and biodiversity studies.
  • Management of Blair Athol’s Remediation Soil Management Program.
  • Proposal of closure criteria consistent with government requirements and community expectations.
  • Development of the Spontaneous Combustion Management Plan.

ENVIRONMENTAL 

Boral

Revesby Pesticide Plant, Revesby NSW Australia

 

Remediation of a former plant via excavation of on-site containment cell. Closure phase delivered through JBS Environmental.

  • Environmental management during the disposal of a stockpile of organochlorine pesticide and asbestos-impacted soil within a containment cell constructed at the site.
  • Environmental management during the excavation of 4,000m3 of soil to allow construction of the containment cell
  • Monitoring and mitigation of groundwater, dust, air toxins, asbestos and odour.
  • Implementation of an exclusion zone via a decontamination unit through which site personnel were required to enter and exit the works area.
  • The conclusion of the works into an overall Contamination Assessment to verify the status of the site.
  • Sampling and analysis of 16 drums of highly contaminated material as part of the program to evaluate disposal options. The drums required transport to Western Australia for disposal by incineration due to this being the only facility licensed to take such material.

The Old Radtel Telemetry System was to be replaced with a modern, open architecture, reliable and easy to manage System. Council chose the Clearscada solution for their project. Over 30 Sites such as Bores, River Intake, WTP, STP, Pump Stations, Reservoirs, Repeaters etc. were to connect. The system also acts as a Virtual Control Room for CCTV Video and Intercom and allows operators to manage sites virtually from anywhere.

UMINEX has conceptualised and implemented an Early Warning System which includes predictive modelling based on the dam level data of previous events combined with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.

 

The system provides 72h / 48h / 24h / 12h and 4 hour previews with high accuracy for the respective dam and catchment. Council staff and Emergency Services are better informed, make better and more accurate decisions and can plan and execute their activities more effectively based on better information.
